From Mr Scott Thomson (Term 2)
Dear Nudgee College Community
Term 2 is now in full swing. Weeks seem to fly by at Nudgee College
During this week’s assembly, I spoke to our young men about ‘paying the price’. My stories came from two very different historical figures; Pope Julius II and Allan Jeans.
Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The two were often in conflict due to the time it took to create the masterpiece that we see today and was created over 500 years ago. No corners were cut and time pressures, despite the Pope’s protestations, were pushed to one side so that perfection could be achieved.
Allan Jeans was a prominent VFL coach of Hawthorn FC. During the 1989 Grand Final, he gave a speech to his players that culminated in the phrase, “pay the price”. His message was simple, don’t go with the easier, cheaper option. Invest in what you do and you will reap the rewards and plaudits that come with not cutting corners. Michelangelo and Pope Julius II are still spoken about, 500 years after their collective achievement because they paid the price.
I spoke to our students about this given the ease with which short-cuts can be taken in society. Phrases like “diligence will always beat intelligence”, “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”, “with ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all things are attainable” or Thomas Jefferson’s “I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it” relate to the point I was making to our boys.
With the rise of efficiencies in Generative AI technology and the difficulties in identifying these technologies, it would be easy for students to generate various pieces of learning without any effort or academic gain. It is vital that we form our young men in such a way that they value the learning that comes with encountering challenges and know the benefits that will flow on if they never cut corners, seek the easy path and look for opportunities to complete ‘extras’. We want them to know the value of ‘paying the price’. This will make them incredible young people who positively impact our society.
EREA Charter Renewal and Mission Strategy Development
As an EREA school, Nudgee College proudly strives to adhere to the EREA Charter. As with all such guiding documents, there are times when a review and renewal process needs to take place. EREA is currently undergoing such a process and happily invites feedback from all stakeholders; students, families and staff. If you would like to pass comment on the current Charter and provide meaningful feedback, please go to this link.
Kind regards
Scott
