The St Joseph's Nudgee College Theatre Sports team, the Blue Bandits, have progressed to heat two of the annual Theatre Sports competition.

The team, which consisted of Year 12 students Jack Peereboom and Stephen Snape combined with Year 10 students Harry Morrison, Reilly McHugh and Ollie Mengel, performed in heat 1 at All Hallows on Wednesday night. The Blue Bandits were one of three teams to be put through.

"The boys performance was outstanding and they are very excited about going through to the next round of heats," said Head of Drama Ms Alison Crilly.

Theatre Sports is a combination of theatre and drama that is created on stage with the imagination of the performers and input from the audience.

Each team is made up of six performers who play a series of games based on improvisation. The teams compete in 1, 2, 3 and 4 minute categories and there are ten games per category that the team must be familiar with. Depending on the order of play, the team picks which game they want to play and the MC and audience provide ideas and stimulus for the improvisation.

Teams are judged on entertainment value, their storyline and on the rules/techniques of the competition. The judges award a mark of 1-5, with 5 being the highest, for each area. The teams with the highest scores at the end of the night progress further with the semi finals and grand final held later in the year.

Each member of the Blue Bandits studies drama and were selected after attending a workshop in Term 1.

"We had a number of boys who attended the workshop in Term 1 and from there we selected those we thought best suited the Theatre Sports competition. The competition is very much like the TV shows Who’s Line is it Anyway and Thank God You’re Here as the teams have no idea what they are going to be doing until they get on stage. It is very entertaining," Ms Crilly said.

Teachers who have assisted with preparation for this year's competition are Ms Crilly, Mr Scott Minogue and Ms Kelly Vowles.

The Blue Bandits next performance will be in the Theatre Sports competition Quarter Finals to be held at St Joseph's Gregory Terrace on Monday June 1. Entry fees are $7 for adults and $5 for concessions with the competition commencing at 7pm.
